How to blur or hide parts of a photo safely

Blur faces, pixelate backgrounds or black out private text — and know which method is safe for sensitive details.

Draw over what to hide

Open Redact image and drag on the photo to cover an area. You can move and resize each box, and choose Blur, Pixelate or Solid for each one.

Blur and pixelate hide from casual viewers

Blur and pixelation are good for faces in the background, number plates in casual photos or cluttered screens. They make details unreadable at a glance.

Use Solid for anything truly sensitive

Blurred or pixelated text can sometimes be partly reconstructed. For passwords, ID numbers, bank details and addresses, use a Solid box, which replaces the pixels completely.

Remove hidden details too

Photos can also contain hidden location and camera data. After redacting, run the image through Remove metadata before sharing it.

Frequently asked questions

Can blur be undone?

It can’t simply be reversed, but blurred or pixelated text can sometimes be guessed or partly reconstructed. Use solid boxes for sensitive information.
