File size & formats

What is WebP, and should you use it?

WebP images are often much smaller than JPEG or PNG. Here’s when that helps and when to avoid it.

A modern image format

WebP is an image format designed for the web. It supports both lossy and lossless compression and transparency, and is often noticeably smaller than an equivalent JPEG or PNG.

Great for websites

If you run a website, serving WebP can make pages load faster. All major modern browsers support it.

Not always accepted

Some government forms, older software and print services only accept JPEG or PNG. When a form lists allowed formats, follow it exactly.
