What is AVIF, and should you convert to it?

AVIF images are often far smaller than JPEG at the same quality. Here’s when to use AVIF and how to convert to and from it.

A newer, smaller format

AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. For photos it is often noticeably smaller than JPEG — and smaller than WebP — at similar visual quality, and it supports transparency.

Great for websites

If you publish images on your own site, AVIF can make pages load faster. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display it.

Not for every upload

Many forms, email clients and older apps still expect JPG or PNG. When a form lists allowed formats, follow it exactly.

Converting to and from AVIF

Convert image can save JPEG, PNG, WebP or HEIC photos as AVIF, and open AVIF files to save them as JPG or PNG. AVIF is encoded on your device, so a large photo can take a few seconds.
