Convert PNG to JPG (and what happens to transparency)

Converting PNG to JPG usually makes files much smaller — but transparent areas need a fill colour.

Why convert

Photos saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG. Converting makes them easier to upload and share.

Transparency becomes a colour

JPEG can’t store transparency, so see-through areas are filled with a solid colour — white by default. The converter shows this option only when your image actually has transparency.

When not to convert

Keep PNG for logos, screenshots with small text and anything that needs a transparent background. JPEG compression can blur sharp edges and text.

You can’t convert back to lossless

Converting a JPEG back to PNG won’t restore lost detail; it just stores the compressed pixels in a larger file.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality?

A little, because JPEG is lossy. At high quality the difference is usually invisible for photos.
