File size & formats

JPG vs PNG vs WebP: which should you use?

Choose a format based on the image, transparency and where it’s going.

JPEG

Best for photographs and accepted almost everywhere. It is lossy and has no transparency.

PNG

Best for screenshots, logos, line art, sharp text and transparency. Photos saved as PNG are usually much larger.

WebP

Supports lossy and lossless compression and transparency, often smaller than both. Modern browsers support it, but some upload forms still don’t — check before using it.

A simple rule

Photo for a form or social media: JPEG. Logo or graphic with transparency: PNG. Images for your own website: WebP.
