Compress PNG files without losing quality

PNG has no quality slider. Here’s how to make PNG files smaller losslessly — and when reducing colours is worth it.

Why PNG is different

PNG is lossless: it stores every pixel exactly. So there is no JPEG-style quality setting — a file can only get smaller by being written more efficiently, or by changing the pixels.

Lossless optimisation first

Compress image rewrites PNGs with oxipng, which tries better filters and compression settings while keeping every pixel identical. Screenshots and graphics often shrink a lot; photos less so.

Reducing colours (lossy)

For logos, icons and screenshots, reducing to 256 or fewer colours can cut the size dramatically with little visible change. It is labelled as lossy because pixels do change; photos and gradients may show banding.

When to switch format

If a PNG is a photograph, JPEG or WebP will usually be far smaller. For a strict size limit, Compress to KB / MB can also allow colour reduction or smaller dimensions when lossless isn’t enough.
