Social media image sizes cheat sheet

Profile pictures, banners, posts and stories for Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok and more.

Why sizes matter

Every platform crops and compresses uploads to fit its layout. Uploading at the recommended size and shape means the platform does less guessing, so your image looks the way you intended.

Profile pictures are circles

Almost every platform shows profile pictures in a circle, even though you upload a square. Keep faces and logos centred with some space around them so nothing important is cut off at the corners.

Banners have safe areas

Banners and covers are shown differently on phones and computers, and profile pictures or buttons often sit on top of them. Keep text and logos near the centre, away from the edges.

These sizes change

Platforms update their layouts without announcing exact numbers. The sizes below are the commonly published recommendations; if an upload looks cropped, check the platform’s own help pages.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best image size for social media?

There isn’t one size for everything. A 1080 × 1080 square works widely for posts, 1080 × 1920 for stories, and each platform has its own banner size. Use the table to pick the right one.

Does the file format matter?

JPEG is best for photos. PNG works well for graphics with text or sharp edges.
