Instagram image sizes: profile picture, posts and stories
The recommended Instagram sizes for your profile picture (DP), square, portrait and landscape posts, and stories.
Profile picture (DP)
Instagram shows your profile picture as a small circle. Upload a square — 320 × 320 pixels is the commonly recommended size — and keep your face centred so the circular crop doesn’t cut it.
| Image | Size (pixels) | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Profile picture | 320 × 320 | Shown as a circle |
| Square post | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 |
| Portrait post (4:5) | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 |
| Landscape post | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 |
| Story / Reel | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 |

Portrait posts get the most space
Instagram posts can be square (1:1), portrait (4:5) or landscape. A 1080 × 1350 portrait post takes up more of the screen in the feed than a square, which is why many creators prefer it.
Stories and Reels
Stories and Reels are full-screen vertical images at 1080 × 1920 (9:16). Keep text away from the top and bottom, where the app places its own buttons.
Grids and carousels
To post a wide photo as a swipeable carousel or split it across your profile grid, use the Split image tool to cut it into equal tiles numbered in posting order.
Frequently asked questions
What size is an Instagram DP?
Upload a square image; 320 × 320 pixels is the commonly recommended size. It is displayed as a circle.
Why does Instagram crop my photo?
Posts taller than 4:5 or wider than about 1.91:1 are cropped. Crop your photo to a supported shape first so you choose what is kept.
