Start with the ratio
An image stretches when width and height are changed independently to a different shape. Set one side and let the other follow, or fit inside a maximum box.
Crop versus padding
Cropping removes edges to fill a new shape. Padding keeps every pixel and adds canvas around it. Choose the trade-off you want.
Export once
Keep the original and make the final export from it. Repeated JPEG exports lose a little quality each time.
