Aspect ratios explained: 1:1, 4:5, 3:2, 16:9 and more

What aspect ratios mean, where each one is used, and how to crop to them.

What a ratio is

An aspect ratio is the shape of an image: width compared to height. 16:9 means 16 units wide for every 9 tall, whatever the actual pixel size.

Common ratios

1:1 is a square (profile pictures, Instagram posts). 4:5 is a tall portrait post. 3:2 is the shape of most camera photos. 16:9 is widescreen video and YouTube thumbnails. 9:16 is full-screen phone stories.

Changing ratio means cropping or padding

You can’t change a photo’s shape without either cutting something off (cropping) or adding space around it (padding). Stretching distorts it and should be avoided.

Crop with a locked ratio

In Crop image, choose a ratio and drag the box — its handles keep the shape locked so you only decide what to keep.
