Passport photo size by country

Photo sizes, digital pixel sizes and file limits for common passports, in one table — with links to each official source.

Most countries use 35 × 45 mm

The international standard printed passport photo is 35 mm wide and 45 mm high, with the head taking up most of the frame. The United States and India (for applications made abroad) are notable exceptions that use a 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) square, and Canada uses a larger 50 × 70 mm print.

Printed size and digital size are different things

A printed photo is measured in millimetres or inches. An online application asks for pixels and often a file-size range. When only a print size is published, the usual conversion is 300 pixels per inch, which turns 35 × 45 mm into 413 × 531 pixels.

What this table can and can’t tell you

The sizes below are compiled from publicly available guidance and can change without notice. Rules also differ between first applications, renewals, children and online or paper routes. Always check the official page linked for your country before you submit.

The background and pose still matter

Size is only one rule. Most countries require a plain light background, a neutral expression, eyes open and no glasses or head coverings unless for religious or medical reasons. Our tools crop and resize — they don’t change backgrounds — so take the photo against a plain wall.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a passport photo in pixels?

It depends on the country. A 35 × 45 mm photo at 300 PPI is 413 × 531 pixels; a US 2 × 2 inch photo at 300 PPI is 600 × 600 pixels. Online applications sometimes set their own pixel range, which takes priority.

Can I take my passport photo with a phone?

Many countries accept phone photos if they meet the rules: good even lighting, a plain background, the camera at eye level and no filters. Crop it to the exact size with the passport photo maker, then check the official requirements.

Is this information guaranteed to be correct?

No. It comes from public guidance and may be out of date. The official source for each country is linked in the table; use it to confirm before you apply.
